The Martinsville School District, along with Eastern Illinois Area for Special Education’s Early Childhood Division , will be offering preschool screenings.
The goal of the preschool screening process is to answer questions parents may have about their child’s development and to identify children who may need preschool education services.
One of the purposes of preschool screening is to comply with Illinois State Law, which requires school districts to engage in child-find activities that assist in serving children with special needs. Early screening enables professionals to identify whether children are meeting their developmental milestones.
Screenings are completed by a team of professionals. Screenings usually take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The screening process checks speech/language development, thinking/reasoning abilities, small and large muscle coordination, listening, vision and hearing skills, and other academic pre-readiness skills.
A parent/guardian questionnaire is also completed during the screening appointment. A screening team member will meet with parents/guardians individually to review your child’s screening results. This includes whether a full evaluation is required, or if your child demonstrated developmentally appropriate skills during the screening.
These services are provided at no cost to parents. Children who exhibit significant delays at the preschool screening may be referred for additional evaluation. Developmental milestones not reached or reached at a much later time than their peers, could be a sign of a developmental delay. Parents/guardians are part of the screening process as well as any follow-up evaluation steps if necessary.
Screenings will be held at Martinsville Bible Church at 509 Ridgelawn Road on March 5th and March 6th. To schedule your child for a screening, contact Paula Wilson at 217-382-4116.
