During the 2023-2024 school year, we will highlight our AMAZING Martinsville District Staff! Each one of our staff members begin teaching for a reason and we've asked them to walk down memory lane and "REMEMBER YOUR WHY"...enjoy this story about 50-year veteran teacher, Sheila Shotts who teaches 3rd grade.
Sheila Shaffner –Shotts attended Indiana State University and earned degrees in Elementary Education and Physical Education. She is an ROE Educator Excellence Award Recipient and a WTHI Golden Apple Award Winner.
When asked why she loves the Martinsville School District, Ms. Shotts said, “My father was raised in Martinsville and my mother taught in the high school. I remember them telling me how supportive and kind the people were. Now I see for myself how unique this community is. I think 50 years of teaching here is proof Martinsville is special.”
She was asked what she enjoys the most about working with MES students. She said, “I enjoy their enthusiasm and passion for learning. Each day is a fun adventure to find each child's inner strength and talent.”
Ms. Shotts said she “was influenced by my first teacher, my mother. I remember helping at her school on weekends. I wanted to be just like her and be a positive influence in a child's life, but it ended up they made a difference in mine.”
She added “I think "ah-ha" moments happen every day. I love when students tell me about something I've taught them that they use now…from finding constellations in the sky, to reminiscing about a play, a dance in PE, or visiting Starlab.”
Thank you for staying for 50 years in Martinsville helping our students learn to love constellations and more! We are thankful for your dedication to our students as you have influenced multiple generations of students/families!
