During the 2023-2024 school year, we will highlight our AMAZING Martinsville District Staff! Each one of our staff members chose education as a career for a reason and we've asked them to walk down memory lane and "REMEMBER YOUR WHY"...enjoy this story about Nurse Sherri Kannmacher (sweetly known as “Nurse K”)…

When asked what she loves about the Martinsville School District, Nurse K said, “growing up in California and frequently moving around, I never felt a connection to any particular place. However, my dad, John, had a different story. He grew up in Martinsville and graduated from the local school. He cherished his time in this community and often shared fond memories of his experiences. Now, I'm proud to say that my children attended the same school as my father, and I'm thrilled to work within this community that means so much to me and my family.”

Nurse K added, “my passion lies in advocating for health and wellness. I'm fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work closely with students, assisting them in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and providing care when necessary. I love being part of a team of professionals committed to ensuring that students have access to the resources they need to succeed. It is a privilege.”

Nurse K said she enjoys working with students because “it is an absolute joy because of their electrifying energy! Their potential is contagious and it's exhilarating to watch them grow and thrive. As mentors, we have the privilege of cheering them on every step of the way.”

Nurse K shared that her “aha” moment was not long after starting work in 2020. She said, “I encountered a kindergartner having a rough day. The teacher had sent her down, fearing that she was unwell. After conducting an assessment, it was clear that she was not sick. We talked about her day in class, and she confided in me that she was struggling with counting, which had left her feeling upset. I shared with her my own struggles with math and we chatted about other topics as well. Eventually, she felt ready to return to class. Over time, she began to draw pictures for me and would come by to say hello. As a new nurse, I was grateful for this connection, and I hope that I was able to offer her some help and comfort as well. To this day, she still stops by to chat and share about her day, and I cherish the bond we've formed.”

Martinsville is so blessed to have an amazing school nurse who does so many things beyond nursing services with students…we thank you Nurse K for your compassion and how you care for our students and staff!
