During the 2023-2024 school year, we will highlight our AMAZING Martinsville District Staff! Each one of our staff members began a career in education for a reason and we've asked them to walk down memory lane and "REMEMBER YOUR WHY". Today you’ll hear about Title I Paraprofessional Jenn Phillips.
Miss Jenn also serves as the MHS Varsity Cheer Coach (year 7), and MHS Musical Director (year 11). She attended Eastern Illinois University with a major in Family Consumer Sciences/Education/Music Education.
Miss Jenn said, “I truly love the family within the district of the Martinsville Schools. Throughout the year, and even day to day, I am between both buildings in the district and I am always thankful to see a smiling face. I am not originally from Martinsville, but I am a Bluestreak through and through. The time I've spend in the community and the schools has made me true blue!”
She added, “I love watching children grow and gain skills and confidence in themselves. It is my favorite part of the job. As a reading para, I am helping students learn the biggest skill to carry with them for the rest of their lives. No matter how many times I see it, there is something special when a child really gets what reading is for the first time.”
Miss Jenn entered the field of education because “my mom was a teacher. I wanted to follow in her footsteps.”
“My big 'ah-ha' moment - I can think of several, but one of my favorites comes from a varsity cheerleader I had several years ago. She was amazing; I loved working with her in both cheerleading and in the musicals. As senior year came closer to an end, she still didn't know exactly what she wanted to when she graduated. She looked at me one day and said, ‘Coach Jenn, I think I am going to join the Marines. What do you think?’ Without hesitation, I told her, ‘There is no one better I can think of to become a Marine. I know you will be amazing.’ She is still serving today as a U.S. Marine, with many accolades. From time to time I get a phone call from her, no matter the time of day I answer and I am always proud to hear of her latest accomplishment.”
Thanks Miss Jenn for “cheering” on our students in and outside of the Title I Reading Room! We are glad you are part of the Martinsville family!
