During the 2023-2024 school year, we highlighted our AMAZING Martinsville District Staff! Each one of our staff members began a career in education for a reason and we asked them to walk down memory lane and "REMEMBER YOUR WHY". Since the 2023-2024 school year has come to a close, we are highlighting the career of the one and only Sheila Shaffner –Shotts, teacher at MES who is retiring after 50 incredible years!
Ms. Shotts attended ISU and obtained degrees in Elementary Education / Physical Education.
When asked what she loved most about working in Martinsville, she said: “my father was raised in Martinsville and my mother taught in the high school. I remember them telling me how supportive and kind the people were. Now I see for myself how unique this community is. I think 50 years of teaching here is proof Martinsville is special.”
She added, “I enjoyed the students’ enthusiasm and passion for learning. Each day was a fun adventure to find each child's inner strength and talent.”
When asked why she chose education as a career, she noted: “I was influenced by my first teacher, my mother. I remember helping at her school on weekends. I wanted to be just like her and be a positive influence in a child's life, but it ended up they made a difference in mine. I think "ah-ha" moments happened every day. I love when students would tell me about something I've taught them that they use now…from finding constellations in the sky, to reminiscing about a play, a dance in PE, or visiting the Starlab.”
Words simply cannot express how grateful the Martinsville District is for Sheila’s lasting legacy that influenced generations of students. We wish her well in her retirement. Everyone who has had the pleasure of working with her knows that the building will just not be the same without her presence. When we look up at the stars at night, we will always remember what a bright star you have been to this community!
Her family and friends would like to invite you to an Open House in her honor, so be sure to mark your calendars!
